Sarah Payne

In the beginning…

A former British Pony Team member, Sarah (nee Grant) has always sought perfection, that has shone through in everything she does. Her early riding days saw many tears shed with her first pony, not the most generous of characters! His daily antics including rubbing Sarah’s legs on every fence he could find. His nasty buck was often in evidence as Sarah landed on the floor again! Until one day the dedication and search for success that is seen today started and this pony was put firmly in his place.

Career moves, the horses win….

Having left school and decided to make her career with horses, Sarah achieved her BHSAI in 1993 and became one of the youngest Listed Dressage Judges at the age of 17. Having qualified as a BHS II in 1996 and BHS I just two years later, Sarah also moved up the judging scale and is currently on List Two.

From ponies to horses….

With the exception of Gorbatjov, who was purchased from Denmark as an advanced schoolmaster, Sarah’s talent and dedication in producing young horses is evident by her competition record that includes national titles at young rider level as well as senior level. These include Gunnerby Gallivanter, who was purchased as a five-year-old and progressed to FEI Pony level in 2 years; Cranswick Amadou who was purchased as a just backed five-year-old and successfully competed up to Intermediaire I level; Unillaes who was purchased as a three-year-old and had successes up to Advanced Medium level and showed a talent for jumping too.

Family life…..

In 1997, Sarah married Mark Payne and two years later, the couple became parents to Harry, who was joined by brother Josh in 2001, and sister Lily was born in February 2004 to complete the family. As family life gets busier with all three children now at school, Sarah is regularly the last mother to turn up the school gates!

Following in mum’s foot steps, Lily has the same detemination and is often demanding attention on her ponies, whereas a welcome change of scenery for Sarah is the football pitch where Harry and Josh are regularly commanding the game.

Horses to date….

Sheepgate Omero and Sheepgate Otto who were both purchased as just backed four-year-olds and have both had many successes up to Advanced Medium level; Sheepgate Ushipower, his reputation goes before him, he was purchased from DHI as a just sat on three-year-old and continues to go from strength to strength having previously scored over 80%. Sheepgate Whisper was purchased as a newly imported four-year-old and gained scores of 70% in his British Dressage debut at novice level. The latest exciting addition to the Sheepgate team is Sheepgate Zander who was purchased from the Brightwells Auction in November 2007 and is already showing his talent in young horse classes during 2008.
